A Long Term Position at a Sixth Form College
by Louise Dealt - Canada

Uprooting your life to live abroad seems to many people too big a project to take on. But after having experienced the thrill of living in London and adventure of traveling all over Europe, I would encourage anybody to take the plunge and go for it. Living in London was a fantastic experience; we lived with like-minded travelers from all over the world and it wasn’t long before London felt like home. Everything I had ever read about London is true - it’s a vibrant, international city where everywhere you go feels like the place to be. It is also true it is a very expensive city, but we could easily afford to pay our bills, travel and have fun on our salaries.

I was lucky enough to find a position early upon arriving in London. As a qualified teacher, it was easy to find work – London is crying out for supply teachers - but I was fortunate enough to secure a long-term position when I arrived in London. I had registered with Southern Alps, who were able to secure me an interview with the College before I moved to England. Working with an agency definitely made things easier as there is someone else scouting out for jobs on your behalf and putting forward your resume to schools.

I was hired by the Sixth Form College, as a Psychology Teacher, a position I was really excited about as such opportunities are not available in Canada. It proved to be a unique and rewarding experience, one that challenged me, but ultimately gave me the confidence to take my teaching abilities anywhere. Throughout the year, both staff and students were extremely supportive of me as a new teacher and a Canadian living abroad – I always felt I had the strength of the College behind me as I developed as a teacher.

To top off our year abroad, my boyfriend and I spent a month of the summer traveling around Europe. We visited 10 amazing cities in four weeks and enjoyed all of the culture, atmosphere, cuisine, sunshine and shopping that Europe has to offer. Having a year abroad was the most rewarding thing I have done in my life and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone to experience it for themselves. Your life at home will still be here for you when you get back, so see what else the world has to offer!
